Dr. Varela is a Specialist Clinical neuropsychologist and Psychotherapist. She holds a MSc in Clinical Neuropsychology (run jointly by the Athens Medical School @ University of Athens and Montreal Institute of Neurology @ McGill University, Canada), as well as a Doctorate in Cognitive Neuroscience (Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London). She has previously held lectureships in Biopsychology, Pediatric neuropsychology, Methodology of sciences & Statistics, Forensic and Applied Psychology at the London School of Economics (LSE) and City University London. In Greece, she offers courses in the above topics for the postgraduate programs in Clinical, Counselling and Neuropsychology programs. She has supervised dozens of undergraduate and post-graduate dissertations and is an active researcher, with peer-reviewed publications and presentations in international conferences and journals.

She has gained significant clinical experience through residencies at the 1st Psychiatric Clinic (depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia) and the 1st Neurological Clinic of Aiginiteio University Hospital Athens (stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease) and the Special Autism Unit @ the General Children’s Hospital "Panagioti and Aglaia Kyriakou", Athens, Greece. She has also completed specialist training in Early Intervention in Infancy and Childhood and in Neurodevelopmental Disorders held by the Department of Psychiatry, Athens Medical School. Her research interests fall in the fields of Pediatric and Geriatric Clinical Neuropsychology, as well as in the application of cognitive neuroscience to the legal system (interrogations, optimization of eyewitness interview protocols, jury selection, children in the judicial system). She is a regular member of the Hellenic Neuropsychological Society and the British Psychological Society.
